Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs) are transforming the ecosystem of e-waste recycling. This is accomplished by Producers, Importers, and Brand Owners (PIBOs) efficiently collecting, channelling, and recycling e-waste on their behalf and assisting them in meeting their collection goals in the process. For the benefit of the PIBOs in the Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) industry, they operate by establishing official networks of collectors, dismantlers, and recyclers of e-waste.
The principal entity responsible for approving a PRO’s right to work in India is the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The PRO’s capacity and abilities to manage the work of collection, transportation, and disassembly are assessed by CPCB. Before granting the authorization, the board also checks the Producer Responsibility Organization’s ability to run an awareness campaign. Additionally, the PROs assist the environmental agencies in PIBO verification, decision-making on current environmental regulations, and prompt reform.
